Significance and importance of Poppies

Football fans would have noted poppies flower worn by the footballers during the recently concluded game week, but do you guys know the importance and significance?

Symbolic of the Poppies :

Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep, peace, and death.

The flower is worn as a mark of respect and remembrance for those who lost their life during the World War.

Since 2012, each and every Premier League club worn poppies during the month of November and the shirt is then auctioned as part of the annual Poppy Appeal organised by The Royal British Legion.

Significance

Northern Ireland and their views on Poppies :

Poppies is northern Ireland is considered controversial as the people there sees it as a political symbol. The people sees it as a support to the soldiers, who killed Irish civilians.

In 1972, the British soldiers shot 28 unarmed civilians during a peaceful protest march.

The event is also called as Bloody Sunday.

James McClean’s decides against Poppies :

The Northern Ireland player didn’t wore a Poppy and the action did receive a massive boo from his own and opposition supporter, however, the player did find some supporter mainly in Tony Pulis, who said he respects McClean’s decision.

FIFA and their stance :

The football governing body has been strict on their stance and have asked teams not to wear poppies during international games.

Last year FIFA was strict on FA and Scottish FA, however, both the bodies decided to go against FIFA’s decision and did wore poppies during the match with both the board stating that they are ready to accept any sanctions from the governing body.

During the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland football teams were fined for displaying the poppy during matches as FIFA considers it as  “political or religious symbols.”

Conclusion :

Significance of Poppies can be interpreted differently for different countries, but the flower does signifies remembrance for the people who lost their life.

The money received from the auction is used for the social welfare thus making it a noble deed.
